Description
The Scrittoio delle Ghirlande by Aly Mohsen is conceived as an inlaid and carved artistic writing desk, realized as a unique work of high cabinetmaking in which function and decorative articulation are integrated within an architectural structure. The piece is rooted in the tradition of monumental classical furniture, reinterpreted through rigorous design and careful material control.
The supporting structure is made of Calabrian walnut from the Sila region, selected for its compactness, structural stability, and chromatic depth. The shaped side panels and the front columns in thuya burl introduce a vertical plastic rhythm, further defined by the presence of bronze decorative elements that articulate the junctions and reinforce the architectural reading of the piece.
A central feature of the work is the garland-themed marquetry system, developed according to a continuous and symmetrical design. The inlay outlines are executed in maple, ebony, and rosewood, while the internal floral motifs employ a calibrated combination of maple, green ebony, light walnut, and dark walnut. Chromatic variation among the different woods is structured through tonal gradations and material balance, in constant dialogue with the wooden ground.
The fall-front panel, hinged on the front, reveals an interior organized with compartments and drawers made of oak, a material chosen for its durability and for the visual contrast it provides with the exterior woods. The interior treatment maintains the same formal coherence and execution quality as the exterior, confirming the unity of the overall design.
The upper surface and the perimeter edges function as a structural and visual frame, containing the decorative apparatus and defining the spatial limits of the composition, thereby contributing to the perceptual stability and compositional clarity of the writing desk.
