Description

In this Portrait of Princess Noura Bent Bandar Al-Saoud, Aly Mohsen explores the language of artistic marquetry with exceptional depth, transforming wood into narrative, emotional, and symbolic matter. The work depicts a female figure holding a child close to her in a gesture of absolute protection, evoking universal themes such as motherhood, responsibility, and the silent strength born of love and duty.

The circular composition focuses attention on the intimate relationship between mother and child, isolating them within a suspended, timeless space. The woman’s gaze—direct, vigilant, and resolute—conveys determination and awareness, while the child’s fragile, gathered body becomes the emotional core of the work, intensifying the contrast between protection and vulnerability.

The marquetry is executed through a refined juxtaposition of precious wood species, carefully selected for their chromatic and material qualities. The lighter tones of the skin are achieved using white maple and light walnut, while the warmer, golden nuances of the garments and flesh draw on rosewood and padauk. The deeper and more structural areas of the figure, as well as the hair and shadowed zones, are constructed with dark walnut, mahogany, and ebony, lending visual solidity and expressive intensity.

The background—an essential element of the composition—is crafted from walnut burl and ebony, creating a vibrant, textured surface that dialogues with the central figure. The natural grain of the burl amplifies the emotional dimension of the subject, while ebony introduces depth and introspection, contributing to an atmosphere that is both intimate and solemn.

The surface of the marquetry, meticulously polished yet intentionally alive, preserves the natural veins and variations of the wood, which become an integral part of the visual narrative. Each tessera is placed with artisanal precision in a rigorous and harmonious construction, where technique replaces painterly color, building volume, chiaroscuro, and depth exclusively through material.

The elaborately crafted frame, conceived in dialogue with the preciousness of the inner work, confers a solemn, museum-quality presence, reinforcing both the symbolic and collectible value of the piece.
